Early Life

San Pedro Calungsod was born on July 21, 1654, in Ginatilan, Cebu, Philippines. He grew up in a devout Catholic family, and from a young age, he exhibited a profound sense of faith and a deep desire to serve the Church.

Mission to the Marianas

In 1668, at the age of just 14, San Pedro Calungsod joined a Spanish Jesuit mission to the Mariana Islands, a remote archipelago in the western Pacific. There, he worked alongside the Jesuit missionaries, teaching the Catholic faith to the Chamorro people.

Martyrdom

San Pedro's mission was not without its challenges. The arrival of the Spanish missionaries brought changes to the Chamorro way of life, which led to tensions and resistance. In 1672, a violent uprising occurred, resulting in the death of San Pedro Calungsod and the Spanish priest, Diego Luis de San Vitores. San Pedro was martyred at the young age of 17, and his selfless sacrifice became a testament to his unwavering faith and dedication to the Christian mission.

Beatification and Canonization

San Pedro Calungsod's cause for beatification and canonization began in earnest in the late 20th century. His beatification, the second step towards sainthood, took place on March 5, 2000. His canonization, the final step, occurred on October 21, 2012, when he was officially recognized as a saint by the Catholic Church. San Pedro Calungsod was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in a ceremony held at the Vatican, making him the second Filipino saint after San Lorenzo Ruiz.

A week after his canonization, His image was brought to Immaculate Concepcion Parish in Antipolo City. There was a welcome mass for him and 'pahalik' right after.
